Using headers and footers in your Word document will make it stand out and look professional. Sometimes you’ll run into problems with formatting so here are a few tips to help you correct any issues you may have.
The Same Header Appears in Every Section
You probably need to turn off Link to Previous.
Open the header in the new section and disable that option.
The First Page Has a Header When It Shouldn’t
Turn on:
Different First Page
Then remove the header or footer content from the first page.
Page Numbers Restart Unexpectedly
Open the page number settings and check:
Format Page Numbers
You may see options to either continue numbering from the previous section or restart at a specific number.
For most reports, choose:
Continue from previous section
unless you intentionally want a new numbering sequence.
My Header Looks Too Close to the Main Text
Open the header and adjust its distance from the top of the page.
You can also check your page margins under:
Layout → Margins
Try to keep enough space between the header and the document body so the page doesn’t feel crowded.
